Dutch universities are vying with each other to find the most prominent speakers to open their academic year. Wageningen University appears to be the winner with Kofi Annan.
The former UN Secretary-General will speak on food security and the price of agricultural products in Wageningen on 1 September. The University of Tilburg has also scooped a remarkable foreign guest: Khaled Abou El Fadl, professor at the University of California. He is an advocate of a ‘progressive Islam,’ for which he considers integration, rationality and democracy necessary.
Premier Jan Peter Balkenende is opening the academic year at Erasmus University Rotterdam on 1 September. The University of Amsterdam has lured Education Minister Ronald Plasterk, while Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen is going to the University of Leiden.
