The cabinet has decided to set up a House for Democracy and the Constitutional State. It will start in the course of the 2008/2009 academic year.

The institute (Huis voor Democratie en Rechtsstaat) will “focus on the transfer of knowledge about the core values of our democratic constitutional state and the working of democracy in all its aspects, especially to young people. As well as a physical building, the ‘House’ is primarily an organisation in which activities take place in The Hague, in the country and on the Internet,” according to the government.

In the period through 2012, the House will be expanded within the available budget until it has reached the desired form. “The approach is that the House will have a physical location in The Hague, near the Binnenhof (government buildings), in which simulations, exhibitions and other activities will take place. This building will also be the operating base for tours, street activities, visits to parliament, the court and the Peace Palace.”

As a contribution to its operation, the cabinet is making a structural 3.5 million euros a year available to the institute. “Other parties will be invited to help further expand the organisation.”
