Global Culture Festival
Saturday 07 June, 16h00-24h00 • Markt • Admission free

On Saturday the 7th of June, Maastricht turns again into a world city of music. We are organising a party on the Market Square, starring three top acts which will perform at the famous Tilburg Mundial Festival, followed by a swinging and energetic Balkan Beat performance.

Programme
- Mapacha Africa from Kenya 4 pm – 5 pm
- Cape Verde Veterans from Cape Verde 6 pm – 7 pm
- Fogny from Senegal 8 pm - 9.30 pm
- Orchestre International du Vetex, Balkan Beat 10.30 pm – 12 pm

Mapacha Africa (Kenya) 4 pm
Enjoy a trip through the Kenyan Savannah. Mapacha Africa from Nairobi will thrill you with their fresh and unique sound from East-Africa. This band uses handmade string and percussion instruments, enabling them to provide their original sound.

The rise of Mapacha Africa seems almost surreal, as their first performance at a primary school in the Kawangware slums resulted, only a year later in their first album release. Mapacha means ‘twin’ in the Kishwahili dialect, expressing the band member’s love for their rich culture and music and their own strong bond amongst each other.

Cape Verde Veterans (Cape Verde) 6 pm
They are the Cape Verdian response to the Buena Vista Social Club: Lela (79), Daniel (60), Zé (50), Vavá (61) and Júlio (41). With their extraordinary guitar music, the Cape Verde Veterans provide an unaltered soulful sound, implying different styles from morna’s and coladeiras to batuko and funaná. The traditional cavaquinho: a four string guitar, which resembles an ukulele, is only one of the essential instruments of this Cape Verdian guitar music.

Years of experience of the Veterans have born their fruit: let yourself be mesmerized by the sounds of the luminous South and carry yourself into the exciting Cape Verdian universe.

Fogny (Senegal) 8 pm
‘Fogny’ originates from the word ‘Eofgny’, which literally means ‘singing’ in Diola, a language from the southern Casamance part of Senegal. Centralizing their original roots, the music style of this orchestra of 10 men and women is marked by the catchy rhythm of Casamance percussion. Their delightful keyboard melodies and their splendid guitar sounds will carry you along into the sultry nights of Casamance moonlight. In Senegal and Zambia, Fogny already has a wide fan base. Now, they are ready to enchant the Netherlands and take their new audience on a musical quest into the South of Senegal.

Orchestre International du Vetex (Balkan Beat) 10.30 pm
The Orchestre International du Vetex plays a bizarre French-Belgian mix of catchy Balkan Music, energetic gypsy, klezmer, ska, java, street music, polka and latino music. Impressing with its inflaming energy, the orchestra alternates stirring themes with modest moments.

Their name is derived from an old textile factory in the multicultural area of the Belgian city Kortrijk. In 2004, this border crossing orchestra consisting of neighbourhood inhabitants, Flemish, Wallonian and North-French musicians, blew a new fresh air into that vicinity. Orchestre International du Vetex is a colourful mixed pot, the most diversified social mix ever! Come, see and celebrate their enormously success.
