“Ightham Mote: Upstairs & Downstairs”

Ightham Mote (near Sevenoaks in the County of Kent) was originally a 14th century fortified manor house, owned by Sir Thomas Cawne. Built in 1340, the square platform encased by a wide moat [medieval spelling is ‘mote’], supported an open hall, the Old Chapel with a crypt beneath it and two solar ranges. In the late 15th
century, Edward Haut founded the quadrangular stronghouse, which enclosed the courtyard and added an outer quadrangle of lodgings and stables.

The speaker: Mrs Heather Woodward
A retired Senior Teacher of French in a Grammar School & Head of 6th Form, she was delighted to be recruited for the National Trust to become one of its volunteer speakers in the South of England. She enjoys doing research into the N.T. Estates etc as well as being involved in (directing) various amateur musical shows, dramatics, painting etc.
