The Health Council of the Netherlands has asked Health Minister Ab Klink to ensure that all prospective parents receive advice about a responsible lifestyle. The idea is that couples planning to start families should be informed about a healthy diet, alcohol, hereditary diseases, medicines and work environments. European research shows a relatively high proportion of stillborn babies and infant deaths in the Netherlands. Labour MP Khadija Arib says women from immigrant communities often do not seek prenatal medical help until late in their pregnancies.

The government has been airing plans to help parents improve the way they raise their children. Family Minister Andre Rouvoet has already launched a ‘Welcome CD’ for newborn babies which includes tips for a healthier lifestyle aimed at parents.
