A third of Amsterdam’s red-light windows to close
About 20 brothels in the Dutch capital’s red light district are to be sold to a major housing association and converted into homes. This means that 50 of the Dutch capital’s famous windows, where prostitutes tout for business, will close - about one-third of the present number.
Towards the end of last year, Amsterdam city council began closing down businesses in the red light district because of alleged criminal activities, and permits for 33 brothels were revoked. To combat crime and inner city decay, the council has also been buying out sex businesses and so-called “coffee shops” which are allowed to sell small amounts of cannabis.
