25 March-1 April: Film Festival Maastricht
March 14, 2007 by Sueli
From March 25 until April 1, Lumière will be the principal venue for the annual Film Festival Maastricht.
Main program
The main program will comprise a mixture of imported films and Dutch avant-premières. New films by renowned directors such as Werner Herzog, David Lynch, François Ozon, Tony Gatlif and Milos Forman will be shown.
The End of Europe
During the festival a daring selection of films will be screened that explore the new boundaries of (the) Europe(an Union), inspired by the book ‘The end of Europe’ by journalist and historians Irene Van Der Linde and photographer Nicole Segers. Their work compiles stories and photographs of everyday people who literarily saw the boundaries of their home countries get dislocated during the course of their lives. During the festival, a selection of Segers’ photographs will be on exhibition in Lumière.
Filmmaker in focus: Paul Cox
This year’s edition of the festival features a retrospective dedicated to the work by Dutch/Australian director Paul Cox. He was born in Venlo, but emigrated to Australia at the age of 22. Cox has been honoured with several important international awards, but in the country of his birth, Cox remains largely unknown. He has always remained an eccentric outsider in the film industry. Recurring themes in his work are hope, love and isolation.
Tigers on Tour
The VPRO Tiger Awards Competition is a section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). The Tiger Awards Competition is always an interesting opportunity to discover new filmmaking talents. Under the heading ‘Tigers on Tour’, three films from the 2007 competition will be shown in movie theatres across the Netherlands.
International Student Night
Within the Film Festival programme, the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance will organize an International Student Night on March 26. During this evening a mix of classical and new films will be shown. These films are either spoken in English or subtitled in English. More information on the International Student Night via www.governance.unimaas.nl (also accessible for non-students).
