Strong shopping ranking for Maastricht
November 24, 2006
Maastricht, Roermond and Heerlen have achieved first, third and sixth place in the national rankings of the strongest downtown area established by Elsevier’s weekly magazine. These Limburg cities owe their position in the Elsevier rankings to the excellent mix of catering, shopping, the arts and services available in their cities.
Maastricht is a clear winner with a grade of 8.26. The city has, in Elsevier’s view, the strongest downtown economic base. The third place awarded to Roermond, with a grade of 8, is the most remarkable because this is a relatively small city center, but it does have a lot of shops, restaurant and catering facilities, arts — it has more than anywhere else in the country.
According to the councilor Jos Van Rey, this is thanks to the designer outlet center that opened just outside the city center a couple of years ago and now attracts 2.5 million visitors annually.
