The original Dutch Santa is facing stiff competition from the red-clad, white-bearded American version, a poll has found.

Thursday’s poll by TNS-NIPO found that for the first time, as many Dutch will give gifts at Christmas as on Dec. 5. Santa Claus is already leading in money spent: Those who hand out gifts on “pakjesavond” — the evening of packages — said they spent about 120 euros ($158) per household, while Christmas presents were worth about 150 euros ($198).
