Dutch union rejects Islamic holiday

October 18, 2006

The CNV Dutch union confederation has withdrawn a proposal to swap a Christian holiday for a free day marking the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

The idea that, for example, the second free day at Whitsun could be scrapped in favour of the Muslim Eid al-Fitr feast-day caused a furore when it was suggested last week.

The CNV received hundreds of mostly negative responses to the proposal, with many defending the second Whitsun holiday as part of the Netherlands’ cultural heritage.
