Dutch remain sceptical of EU

May 5, 2006

A report by the European Commission shows that most people in the Netherlands remain sceptical with regard to the European Union. The report, which is based on an opinion poll conducted last February among 25,000 EU citizens, found that two-thirds of Dutch respondents consider the EU inefficient, with one in seven of the Dutch even accusing Brussels of being a waste of money.

However, while a majority of the Dutch question the benefits of European integration, around 60 percent are in favour of EU expansion. Most of those questioned want the EU to ensure equal living standards in all member states.
