Dutch relax restrictions on Polish workers
June 1, 2006
The Dutch employment ministry has lifted the restrictions on workers from eight EU member states as of next month. The workers will be able to take jobs in agriculture, inland shipping, light engineering industry, slaughterhouses and fish processing plants, and in scientific research. These five sectors of the economy have been selected because they are facing shortages of qualified personnel. The Netherlands must open its borders to workers from the new EU member states on 1 January of next year at the latest. The cabinet wants to gradually open up more sectors of the economy to the new EU citizens.
