Dutch film director to make film on gay Islam leaders
Film director Eddy Terstall is to make a film on homosexuality among Islam leaders in the 15th and 16th centuries. The film is based on the novel ‘Male Harem’ (Mannenharem) by Vinco David.
David’s novel is a historically based tale about male harems kept by various Islamic Mogul Emperors in India in the 15th and 16th centuries. “During the Golden Age of Islam, people’s ideas on homosexuality were far more relaxed and liberal than they are today”, as Terstall stated yesterday. “Right-wing imams would do well to read some books before deciding to speak out again”.
Terstall is a celebrated director in the Netherlands. His last film Simon (2004) was awarded with four Golden Calves - a Dutch version of the Oscars. Since about a year, Terstall has been toying with the idea of going into politics. The film director is a member of Labour (PvdA) and is thinking about representing this party in the Lower House.
David and Terstall are to work on the script together. It is unclear whether Terstall is to direct the film himself. Sextet and Vox Populi, the last two parts of his trilogy on contemporary Dutch society, will keep him busy for at least another year. Filmmaker Theo van Gogh was also involved in this trilogy before he was assassinated by a radical Muslim.
