A court in The Hague has ordered the release of two newspaper journalists who were detained on Tuesday after refusing to reveal their sources.

The two reporters refused to say who passed them confidential intelligence service files containing information about a major crimes boss.

Their detention led to a storm of protest in the Netherlands. Dutch Labour MP Aleid Wolfsen wants to introduce legislation defining the circumstances under which journalists are allowed to protect their sources. He said a free press was of vital importance, but argued journalists should be denied the right to protect their sources in cases involving terrorism and sex crimes.
