Liege tops European crime league
The Belgian city of Liège is one of Europe’s most crime-hit cities, European Commission figures indicated on 8 December. Liège recorded the highest number of registered crimes per 1,000 residents in 2001, the EC comparative audit revealed.
The audit found that 256 crimes per 1,000 residents were recorded in Liège, placing the Wallonian city at the top of the European rankings. Liège topped the cities of Utrecht (230), Stockholm and Göteborg (204) and Hamburg (184), newspaper ‘De Standaard’ reported.
Other Belgian cities also recorded high crime rates, with Brussels registering 153 crimes per 1,000 residents, Charleroi 144 and Antwerp 117.
However, Liège judicial authorities have raised doubts about the comparative methods used by the EC. They also pointed out that the city’s crime rate has sharply declined in recent years.
